Whitmer Won’t Defund ‘All The Police,’ State Police Handle Her Emergency Communications
Wants less law enforcement, criminal justice in budget
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she supports the spirit of the “Defund The Police” slogan in an online interview.
Whitmer described how the state budget should focus more on schools, social services, career training, transit and less on law enforcement. She said, “We’re not going to defund all the police but we’re going to make the investments in people.”
The Michigan State Police has played a prominent role in the COVID-19 State of Emergency declared by the governor. Among other duties it operates a State Emergency Operations Center and disseminates press releases from both the governor and attorney general related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
