Taking Lives Indiscriminately?
Gov. Whitmer suggests COVID an equal opportunity killer; data on victims’ ages indicates otherwise
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke to the Detroit Free Press about the COVID-19 pandemic and made this claim, which was published in a Dec. 22 story: “I mean, it was wreaking havoc and just indiscriminately, apparently, taking lives.”
The fatalities related to COVID-19 have not been indiscriminate, according to data provided by the state of Michigan.
From Jan. 1 through Dec. 10, 2021, there were 12,046 deaths associated with COVID-19 in Michigan. Just eight of those deaths have been of children up to 14 years old. By comparison, 8,692 were people age 65 and over, or 72% of those who died with causes associated with COVID-19.
