Shortage? 10.5% More Teachers In Michigan For 2.1% Fewer Students

Over the past three years, there has been a 10.5% increase in the number of teachers working in Michigan public schools. During the same time, there has been a 2.1% decrease in student enrollment\.

The number of teachers working in Michigan’s public schools increased from 98,481 in 2016-17 to 108,801 in 2019-20, the most recent year state data is available. At the same time, enrollment has dropped from 1.53 million to 1.50 million.

They’re No. 1: Utica Teachers Michigan’s Highest Paid

Earned $81,641 on average; the statewide average was $63,553

For the second year in a row, Utica Community Schools teachers were the state’s highest paid, on average.

Utica teachers received an average salary of $81,641 in 2019-20. Teachers at Warren Consolidated Schools were the second-highest paid, with an average salary of $81,487.

The figures come from a Michigan Department of Education’s annual survey, released in March.

The average teacher salary statewide was $63,553 in the 2019-20 school year.

Michigan teacher salaries vary greatly depending on the district. For example, the average salary of a Benton Harbor Area Schools’ teacher in 2019-20 was $44,197, or 46% lower than teachers in the top-paying school district.
