Michigan's unemployment rate has jumped from 4% in the month of March to 23.8% in April. The unemployment rate for the U.S. was 14.4% in April.
In April, the state lost 977,200 jobs. Michigan had 4,380,900 jobs in March. The data comes from the Michigan Office of Labor Market Information.
The highest unemployment rate in the state previously was 17.3% in January of 1983.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's first round of executive orders shuttered some non-essential businesses on March 16. The stay-at-home executive order took effect March 23.
