Lansing Protest: ‘I Think We Are Making History’

Signs: ‘I want to work’; ‘Reopen Michigan Now’; ‘Let MI people mow!’

A massive drive-in protest filled Lansing on Wednesday with vehicles surrounding the state Capitol, turning the downtown area into gridlock and reportedly jamming several miles of the freeway leading into the city. Protestors honked their car horns and waved flags in protest of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home orders.

Breitbart News, along with dozens of citizens at the event, posted a livestream of the rally. Its video registered 2.1 million views at 1:16 p.m.

“I think we are making history,” Kyle Olson of Breitbart News said as he showed a man holding a sign that read, “Reopen Michigan Now.”

State Rep. Matt Maddock posted a live video in which he interviewed two men in a car who said they were self-employed and hurting.

“Well, we are going to get back to work soon, guys. Hang in there,” Maddock told them.

Here’s some of the scenes captured on video:

A black SUV displayed a “Recall Whitmer” sign while an occupant of the vehicle waved the American flag out a window.

A man was using a megaphone to yell, “No more 1984! ... Are you afraid of tyranny?”

A woman walked down the street wearing a red bandana, and with a megaphone she said, “We are Americans and we aren’t gonna take it no more. We are the land of freedom and our rights are being taken.”

“I’m so excited that I’m not alone,” a woman from Chelsea told Breitbart News as she was standing on the state Capitol grounds. The woman said she owns a small business that’s not making any sales.

Another man, wearing a baseball cap, was holding a sign that read: “I want to work.”

The man told Breitbart News he works for an auto supplier.

“I just applied for unemployment for the first time in my life,” the man said. “I’m 33.”

There were pro-Trump signs, and one man stood on a vehicle waving a banner that read “Trump Keep America Great.”

Breitbart interviewed Steve Gruber, a conservative radio host of WJIM, at the rally.

“The highways are jammed. They are coming in from every direction. North. South. East. West. I have never felt the anger like I see out here. These people just want to work. This is the anger that is building,” Gruber said. “I’ve never felt the anger that I’m feeling out here today.”

Gruber said extending the stay-at-home order and adding more restrictions probably cost the governor her shot at being Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.

“Right now, what Gretchen Whitmer has done, is put Michigan back in Donald Trump’s column,” Gruber said. “Look at this. You think these people are not going to vote? ... It’s over. Look around governor. Nobody is buying it anymore. ... The party is over Gretchen, if you haven’t noticed. Look around.”
