As Coronavirus Case Numbers Soar, Deaths Plummet
July is the first month since the coronavirus epidemic began that the U.S. experienced more than 50,000 new cases reported on a single day. On July 6 there were 50,584 new COVID-19 cases, the fourth time this month the daily count was above 50,000.
But even as cases have spiked, death rates have plummeted. There were 378 additional U.S. coronavirus deaths reported on July 6.
By comparison, on April 21, when 26,194 new cases were reported, 2,749 people lost their lives to the disease. The number of daily U.S. deaths from the disease has not exceeded 1,000 since June 9.
